In a strategic move aimed at enhancing cybersecurity capabilities, U.S. Cyber Command (Cybercom) has launched an artificial intelligence task force dedicated to identifying and implementing cutting-edge technologies.

The initiative stems from an AI roadmap developed by Cybercom in response to a mandate from Congress, as part of the fiscal 2023 annual defense policy bill. This legislation tasked Cybercom, along with key stakeholders such as the Department of Defense chief information officer and the director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), to devise a comprehensive five-year plan for the rapid adoption and acquisition of AI systems for cyber operations forces.

“U.S. Cybercom has developed an AI roadmap and is working to apply AI in cybersecurity to better identify and close vulnerabilities across Department of Defense networks,” stated Gen. Timothy Haugh, commander of Cybercom, during remarks at the Summit on Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats.

Haugh emphasized that AI serves as a crucial tool for advancing Cybercom’s mission, empowering cyber operations forces with enhanced capabilities. To streamline the integration of AI technologies, Cybercom has established an AI task force tasked with achieving three primary objectives:

  1. Delivering AI capabilities for operations by integrating AI technologies into offensive and defensive cyber operations conducted by the cyber mission force.
  2. Posturing the command to enable AI adoption by addressing critical material issues, including policy and standards for responsible and ethical AI application.
  3. Countering AI threats through proactive measures to safeguard national security systems and the defense industrial base.

The AI task force represents a collaborative effort between Cybercom and the National Security Agency (NSA), where Haugh also serves as head. NSA’s AI Security Center, housed within the Cyber Collaboration Center, complements Cybercom’s efforts by focusing on detecting and countering threats, fostering partnerships across government, industry, and academia, and promoting best practices in AI security.

Addressing concerns about AI’s potential risks, Haugh underscored the importance of employing AI in a controlled and transparent manner to safeguard civil liberties and privacy. He expressed confidence that the NSA’s expertise in AI science positions the agency to manage these risks while advancing national security interests effectively.

Cybercom officials anticipate leveraging insights from the AI task force to optimize defensive and proactive AI strategies against emerging threats.
